Arch Cape was not on our list of places to visit this summer. It’s not because we didn’t love it because we loved it, too much probably, but because we had said we wanted to see new places this summer. We had planned on coming back in a couple of years. I searched long and hard for a place to go in the US during June. We still didn’t have passports for the kids even though we had all the paperwork filled out for months (#toomuchgoingon) so we wanted to find a beach to visit since we spend so much time in the mountains. I found a few places but they all kept falling through or dates didn’t work. One night I decided to check and see if the house in Arch Cape was available and it was. I sent the link to Graham and he said let’s go.
We have had this trip planned for a couple of months but as of Friday afternoon I wasn’t sure if we would be able to make it. My mom called me and let me know that my Grandma wasn’t doing well. Her health has been declining for awhile but this time the call was different. I packed an overnight bag and headed to Houston to see her and be with my mom. I’m not sure if that was the last time I will see my Grandmother, she is a such a fighter, but if it was, seeing her smiling and laughing is the way I will remember her. I went back and forth on whether or not to leave and come on the trip but after talking with my parents I decided we should still come. I headed back home to pack our stuff and get us ready to go.
So here we are.
And everyone is pretty happy about it.
I’m so glad we decided to come. I’m not sure if we will be here the entire time we have planned but we will enjoy the time that we do spend here. It’s a beautiful place that means a lot to us. It’s where we decided to make travel a top priority and solidified our decision to homeschool so that we could make that happen.
The kids said they didn’t remember the “cold beach” but as soon as we pulled up to the house and they saw the beach they both yelled that they remembered and couldn’t wait to get out there and start collecting seashells and shrimp crabs. It didn’t take them long to brave the cold water and get completely soaked.
This place y’all. It’s special and I can feel that this time it’s going to be a different trip, our time being spent more intentionally. That’s the thing about coming back to a place you have been before. You don’t feel like you have to be somewhere, seeing something every day. You don’t have to cram it all in. You can take your time and see the places you really love and enjoy.
That’s the plan anyway. Take it nice and slow. Enjoy our time together and make some new memories.
